Display Technologies

Displays come in four main families, monochrome LCD, TFT, OLED, and E-Paper, and they differ mainly in how they make light. That one difference drives power, sunlight readability, color, and speed, and it decides which technology fits your product. This hub explains each family and how to choose between them.

If you already know you need a decision, start with the full comparison below; if you want to understand a single technology, jump straight to its explainer. Everything here stays at the “which technology” altitude — the how-it-works layer is Display Fundamentals, and panel-level specs and product selection live on the product pages each article links to.

Four display families placed by how they make light: monochrome LCD and TFT are backlit, OLED is emissive, and E-Paper is reflective. That single difference is the root of every tradeoff in power, sunlight readability, color, and motion, and it is what this hub helps you choose between.
The four families, by how they make light. That is the root of every tradeoff.

A suggested reading path

Start with the decision, then read the family you land on. The rest fill in detail as needed — nothing here is a prerequisite for anything else.

A reading order that starts with the cross-technology comparison to choose a family, then branches to the explainer for the family you land on, TFT, OLED, or E-Paper, and finally, for E-Paper, follows up with color and types. Nothing is a prerequisite; the comparison is the one place to start.
